As a writer, I’ve had my fair share of despair and hate towards ChatGPT. Sometimes I feel threatened that it will take my job. But other times, I remember that like many tech-related products, it is a trend that will pass on.
I get asked on a weekly basis about my opinion on ChatGPT and for the longest time, I ignored it. It wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I decided to use it and my opinion has changed.
Nowadays, I embrace it and even use it in more writing practice. So let’s discuss how to properly use ChatGPT.
I’m sure that you need no introduction to ChatGPT. It’s the ‘all-knowing’ 🙄AI program that’s able to generate written responses to any request.
While admittedly ChatGPT can pretty helpful when it comes to boring low-effort tasks, it is most certainly NOT able to replace a writer.
I can confidently say that the text it generates is mediocre at best. It is the plainest generic text you can ever receive — and that’s fine.
I like to compare ChatGPT answers to a plate of plain spaghetti.
Sure, plain spaghetti is edible but you will never go out of your way to cook it like that. You need sauces, seasoning, and toppings to make your spaghetti tastes better.
ChatGPT can help you generate the bare necessities needed to start your work. For example, it is easier to edit a wall of text than to write a paragraph from scratch.
Although you might not be a writer, you should never pass off ChatGPT’s work as the final answer. You should aim to add your personal ✨touch✨ to it by modifying it.
Because once you start adding the proper language for the intended audience, sentence flow, humor, and odd sentence structures, your plain spaghetti turns into a delicious dish of carbonara.
Things ChatGPT can do
As mentioned in this newsletter, here’s how I recommend using ChatGPT:
Generate and brainstorm ideas
Simplify and explain complex concepts
Rephrase paragraphs
Save time on low-effort low-impact tasks
Create templates for cover letters (More on this next week 👀)
Improve your writing skills
Finally, I mention that you should never rely on ChatGPT for fact-checking and research since it can provide false information.
